Werth a fortune
Congratulations to Jayson Werth and the Philadelphia Phillies for winning the World Series over Tampa Bay, four games to one.
A 28-year World Series drought ends
Jayson Werth, as the four of you that read this blog know, is from Chatham, IL, just about 7 miles or so down the road. He is the starting right fielder for the Phillies and, in my mind, made a pretty good case for himself to be MVP of the Series. Ultimately they gave the award to Cole Hamels, who did pitch insanely well in the post season, but I was really hoping Jayson would have gotten it.
My dad has been umpiring high-school and college baseball in Illinois for many years, and I heard him say recently that Jayson Werth is the best pure ballplayer he’s ever umpired. I think he showed that this season, and especially in the playoffs and World Series. It’s great to see a “local boy hits the big time” story for once.
Congratulations, Jayson. You deserve it. I honestly was rooting for the {Devil} Rays, but Jayson was the one reason I would have been okay with the Phillies winning it.

That’s how I felt, too. I would have liked to have seen the Rays win because they’d never been in a Series before, but I wanted the Phillies to win because of Jayson.
Your comment about Jayson is correct, Johann. He is the best all-around ball player I have ever had the opportunity, and privilege, to umpire games they participated in. That’s including guys like Mark Clark, Rusty Staub, Joe Girardi, Kevin Seitzer, and “Young” Dick Scholfield.
Congrats to Jayson and the Phillies. To bad the Cardinals didn’t have the foresight to pick him up when they had the chance a couple of years ago.
