Random ramblings from an idiot

Do your duty and vote on Nov. 4

Less than a week before the elections.  Less than a week until all the ridiculous commercials stop.  Less than a week until all the sniping stops.  Well, all right, some of the sniping.  Point is, this will all be over in a week.  And I mean that in more ways than one.  This post is directed only at the people reading this post, the people whom the people reading this post know, and the people whom the people reading this post do not know.  (That would be everyone, Sunshine.)

Get out and vote.  People will say, “my vote doesn’t count”.  ALL votes count.  Regardless of the rumors about crooked Chicago voting (that’s actually true), or seriously confused Florida voters, all votes are actually counted and all votes actually matter.  I don’t think I have to spell out the different scenarios, unlikely that they are, in which one vote would make all the difference.  Then you hear people say “I don’t vote because they’re all crooked/rotten/unqualified etc.”.

Truer words are virtually never spoken, but there again, that’s why your vote is so important.

Folks, voting is one of the few true powers the public has left.  We decide who becomes President of the United States.  We decide who becomes governor of Illinois.  Okay, so we didn’t exactly make the best choices in either race, but you get the idea.  That is a huge responsibility, and one that should not be taken for granted.

Don’t like Obama?  Vote for McCain.  Don’t like McCain?  Vote for Obama.  Don’t like either of them?  Me either- vote for someone else.

If I were to have to be politically classified- I despise being thrown into any random arbitrary demographic or being “labeled”- I would have to call myself Republican, or at least conservative.  However, I am not- repeat, NOT- a Bible-thumping ultra-rightwing nut job.  (Extremists in any direction in any arena are nut jobs, folks.  I’m not being nasty, it’s a fact of life.)  I definitely lean more right of center than left, but I am not exclusively “right-wing”, as I believe many people are not 100% one way or the other.  Some issues are most certainly “one side or the other”- you either condone murdering unborn babies or you don’t, for example- but most issues are not {always} cut and dry, black or white, yes or no.

For example, obviously, I don’t believe in hacking apart fetuses for no apparent reason, yet I do 100% support the death penalty.  I can hear the libbies now: “killing is killing, blah blah blah”.  True, but at least in the case of the death penalty, it is justified.  Let’s see, do we kill a convicted murder/rapist/child sex offender, or do we kill an unborn child who did absolutely nothing to anyone other than be the product of careless, selfish, irresponsible people?  Sounds like a pretty easy call to me.

Now I’m not here to argue the rightness or wrongness of abortion.  I’ll let you give me your argument in favor of slaughtering fetuses at another place at another time.  The point is that people actually can be somewhat “contradictory” in their beliefs.  And the big point here is that just because someone’s beliefs don’t match yours DOESN’T MAKE THEIRS WRONG.  (Except in the case of people who support abortion.)  Again, I don’t see how people can justify abortion yet not the death penalty.  THAT’S messed up.

I’m straying again.  The point is that Barack Obama is not the answer to our problems.  Obama is a show pony.  A novelty act, if you will.  They’re parading him around the country like the second coming of Lincoln, JFK, Martin Luther King, and in some cases, Jesus, all rolled into one.  That’s a major insult to anyone with ANY intelligence whatsoever, but that’s their game.  He will do nothing but socialize America and give everything to the “poor and underprivileged”, which is fine and dandy and so {disingenuously} noble, but guess who pays for the free healthcare and free this and free that?  You and me.  The people that bust their asses day in and day out, and then get screwed over for it.  You think the country is screwed up now, wait until Obama is elected.  I truly believe he will be elected- not because he deserves it or because he is the “right man” (he is not), but because he’s new and different.  And just so you know, voting for Obama simply because he is black IS JUST AS RACIST as not voting for Obama simply because he is black.  As I have lamented countless times here in the past, nobody seems to get that.

Then you have John McCain.  He is no more the right man for the job than Obama.  All McCain will do is add on to Bush’s groundwork- something McCain has more or less stated he will do, and something which obviously hasn’t worked in eight years.  (And don’t go exhonerating Clinton of contributing to our fucked up situation, Bush-haters.  Funny how the left-side seems to look the other way from Democrats’ indiscretions, faux-pas and FUBARS.)  McCain’s other big red check mark in MY eyes is that he wants to give tax breaks to (and supports this whole gubment bailout for) all the slimy rich bastards that caused a good portion of our economic sodomy in the first place.  Again, who pays for that?  You and me.  Politicians seem to either want to give people something for nothing- making them unwilling to actually try to work for anything- or else keep the rich rich, either way giving the tab to us working class people.

By the way, please explain to me what is so wrong with Sarah Palin?  What, because she shot a moose or a polar bear or something?  Big deal.  At least she didn’t kill an unborn child.  Again, if the choice is a fetus or an animal, sorry Bullwinkle.  You lose.  It’s called “proper perspective”.

Anyway, as I return from my tangent again, here’s the thing.  If you must vote for McCain, fine.  Dumb ass.  If you must vote for Obama, fine, you bandwagon hopping mindless sheep.  Just vote.  Vote McCain, vote Obama, or vote someone else.  Yes, you actually CAN do that.  Vote for Pat Paulsen, vote for Pedro (whoever the hell “Pedro” is), vote for Brangelina, vote for me, hell, vote for yourself.  There is nothing saying you MUST vote for one guy or the other.  If that were the case, they wouldn’t give you the write-in option.  Honestly, NOT voting for someone could make an even bigger noise than actually voting for or even against someone.

But just go vote.  The only people who don’t vote are the lazy and apathetic.  There is no cost to register to vote, and the only “requirement” is that you are 18 years of age.  Anyone over 18 who is not registered to vote is an idiot.  If you don’t vote, then you truly have no grounds to bitch about the country.  It’s like the ballplayer that rides the bench but doesn’t want to shoulder any blame for losing the game.  Win as a team, lose as a team.  If you don’t contribute, then you don’t get to complain, OR to take any credit for anything.  Don’t like the way things “are”?  Change them.  That’s what voting is for.

JUST VOTE, people.

  1. Something that should scare us all: If something should happen to Obama or McCain, and then to Biden or Palin, that would make NANCY PELOSI President of the United States!

  2. Just because I might vote for Obama does not make me a “bandwagon hopping mindless sheep.”

And since you brought it up, explain how someone getting an abortion 1) affects you in any way, and B) is any of your business.

  3. It doesn’t and it’s not.

I just have a problem with people that dismember and murder children, that’s all. I’m funny that way. If you’re okay with that, I guess that’s your right.

  7. Thank you, Marie. I figured, especially since AnonComm disagreed with me, that I was in for yet another beating.

    But thank you.

  8. Johann

Which of the following is true?

    A. voting for a candidate based on the single issue of abortion is pointless, because the President does not possess the power to overturn Roe v. Wade. It would be like me seeking out a candidate who believes, as I do, that the sky should be pink. It’s nice to think that we’d be on the same page, but if they can’t make that happen, maybe I’d better look at more than that particular single issue.

    B. The President DOES in fact possess some power over Roe v. Wade by appointing justices to the Supreme Court who are pro-life.

If you choose B. you have to admit the total failure of your Republican Presidents to get that done. Reagan and the Bushes didn’t get Roe v. Wade overturned, and if may dare, no Republican President will ever try in earnest to do so. Because then what platform will they have to run on? No disrespect, Johann, but the “sheep” are those who keep voting based on a single issue which will never change because at the point that Roe v. Wade is overturned, you might have to start opening your eyes to all of the other human injustices and see that by and large, it is the Democrats who are truly the pro-life party.

  9. No disrespect in return, Nancy, but I don’t vote on a single issue either. You are correct in that the Repubs haven’t been able/haven’t tried to overturn Roe v. Wade, but I can’t vote for anyone that {at least openly} supports abortion. Rational or not, “eyes closed” or not, that’s simply how I feel. I simply don’t feel it’s right. Bottom line, it IS legal and until it’s not, I have to accept it. I don’t have to condone or support it, however.

But again, it’s not the only issue I look at when I vote, not by a long shot. It’s just that, other than abortion (in MY opinion and my opinion only), one doesn’t HAVE to be necessarily 100% Democrat or Republican across the board, or for that matter, Liberal or Conservative, in their thoughts and beliefs. I do believe in SOME of the Democratic/liberal philosophies, but I also believe in some of the Republican/conservative philosophies as well. Only problem is that there aren’t any candidates who do the same.

At least none that make it to the ballot, anyway.

Anyway, my basic point was that people need to vote for someone, be it Obama, McCain, Bozo the Clown, whomever. I truly meant no disrespect. You’re a regular here, Nancy; you should know my debating skills suck. ;)

  10. Don’t sell yourself short, you’re quite adept at debating.

I think a huge impediment in a lot of pro-lifers getting behind Obama is the notion that, as you said, he “supports abortion”. A lot of the spin has been geared toward suggesting that he advocates abortion, encourages it. I’ve even heard suggestions that Democrats/liberals were “mad” that Palin’s daughter didn’t have one. That’s simply not true.

Ted Rall aside, I don’t think you’ll meet many people who think abortion is awesome. What you will find, however, are some politicians that know it’s a difficult decision for EVERY woman that has to make it, that it’s not done lightly or frivously, that it’s often a decsion made alone, without the support of family and some of these politicians are actively trying to figure out ways to make abortion unnecessary (sex education). There’s a very real chance of making that happen (unlike overturning Roe v. Wade, which you and seem to agree is a long shot). At the very least, we might be able to reduce the number of abortions.

    I’m all for that!

  12. I voted. I’m so happy that I can just mail that thing in… I still am in total disbelief Bush was elected twice. Even 8 years later and all of the crap we’ ve been through. Damn it! I want my twenties back. I was just thinking about how that guy’s campaigns were of almost no substance at all…And I guess that’s how I feel hearing anyone from some wierd-ass place like Alaska trying to scare people with terms like “Socialism,” (interpreted as Communism by most people…people who have nowhere near the kind of money or lifestyle to support whatever views their Conservative heroes are spouting off about) and “domestic terrorist.” These people are idiots, Johann. They vote for people they want to have a beer with. They’re the ones that keep places like Wal-Mart in business and then wonder where their shitty job ran off to, when it didn’t pay dick to begin with… I can no longer even use the same voting booth as some oafy windbag, white trash piece of dung…like ‘Joe the Plumber.’ That guy’s for real, and unfortunately he’s a scumbag. But as long as he pays for cable…

  13. Pedro offers you his protection. And if you vote for him, he says that all of your wildest dreams will come true. Can Barack or John do / promise the same?

  14. We should call you Johann the Plumber. You speak from the gut just like him and are obviously just as informed on the world.

P.S. Unless you have a set of ovaries, anything you have to say on a woman’s right to choose is irrelevant. Shut you man-hole and stay out of it. I do.

  15. That was absolutely beautiful. Thanks for commenting.

I will say, though, that what I have to say on fetuses getting slaughtered is, in fact, VERY relevant, and my “man-hole” will stay open about it. Just because you choose to turn a blind eye to children being murdered doesn’t mean I have to.

    Have a nice day.
