Irvine Robbins 1917-2008

The “R” of “BR” has died.

Irvine Robbins, co-founder of Baskin-Robbins ice cream along with brother-in-law Burton Baskin, died on Monday in Rancho Mirage, CA. He was 90. (In case you’re wondering, Burton Baskin died in 1967.) Mr. Robbins retired in 1978 after having sold the company to United Fruit Company (information courtesy of the sometimes-accurate Wikipedia; I apologize if it’s wrong.)

Countless, countless hot fudge sundaes with Mint Chocolate Chip and Rocky Road have been jammed down my gullet in 40 years thanks to Messrs. Baskin and Robbins. Countless more will be similarly jammed in Mr. Robbins’ honor.  (And Mr. Baskin’s as well…)
