It’s just water, folks
I mentioned a few days ago about “beer snobs” and “coffee snobs”, and proceeded to catch all sorts of shit from a self-proclaimed “beer geek“. Some people can’t take a joke.
But I neglected to mention the “water snob”, a quite interesting type of snob.
I drink some water, which is to say nowhere near the amount I should. But I drink it from the tap. I’m not going to pay a buck-fiddy to two dollars or more for something I can get out of my house for damned near free, that is virtually identical to the store-bought bottled stuff that people claim is so much better tasting and better for you.
Friggin’ lambs.
I think many drinkers of the Dasani, Alhambra, Deja Blue, Hinckley Springs, Ice Mountain, and all the other hoidy-toidy bottled water brands would be shocked to know that their water really isn’t that much better than tap water (unless you live here… sorry Mom), and in some cases, is no better for you. You’re paying for hype.
Truth is, all that bottled, “natural spring” water is no better for you than water out of your tap. If you’re still scared to death that your tap water contains various cooties and what not, get yourself a Brita or Pur filter (whether in pitcher form or attached directly to your faucet- they even make refrigerators with water dispensers with Brita filters now) and you’re golden. Don’t buy in to the super-chic myth that it’s better and somehow classier to drink the expensive stuff- that probably comes out of a tap at the plant anyway.
But the best line I ever heard regarding bottled water snobbery came just this morning from ESPN’s Colin Cowherd:
” ‘Evian’ is ‘naive’ spelled backwards.”
How can you argue with that?

You can’t tell the difference between Dasani and tap water? You bumpkin, have you no appreciation for the finer things?
Seriously though, I agree with you on the folly of bottled water. You might be interested to know that some of the trendier restaurants on the coasts are no longer offering bottled water, citing environmental concerns (discarded bottles, the fuel needed to transport it, etc.)
I’m enjoying a frosty glass of city water as I type this.
I have good teeth, perhaps in part due to Hanford’s delicious refreshing water. It’s full of sulphur, sure, but I DON’T SMELL IT. It’s just water.
OK, sorry, gagged a little bit trying to understand the notion that tap water is OK. I have a cheap-ish filter on my kitchen sink, but am going to be investing in a better, under counter mount soon. If you saw the crap that builds up on the filter….seriously, ugh, I’m gonna throw up.
Agree with you about bottled water, most of which comes from some municipal water source somewhere. Home filtering is essential though.
Dan: I did NOT know that. Interesting.
AnonCom: And it’s just fine, isn’t it.
Marjorie: No, you have good teeth IN SPITE of Hanford’s disgusting water that smells like a fart. You DO smell it, you just choose to block it out of your mind.
Nancy: Seriously, I know Springpatch’s tap water is not great, but it’s no worse than the supposed “premium” bottled stuff. That’s the whole point. If you want to filter it, knock yourself out. I don’t filter my water and I’m fine. The toe growing out of my belly button is actually quite the conversation starter.
Generally I think Colin Cowherd is a blow-hard. I listen to him just to get myself riled up.
However, I heard the comment he made about “Evian” spelled backwards is “naive”. I laughed my a$$ off when I heard that comment. And Colin couldn’t have been any closer to the truth.
Any yes, M. Whether you will admit it or not, Hanford water is brutal. It flat out stinks. I lived there for several years and never ever got used to it.
I agree that Cowherd is basically a blow-hard, as are MOST of those yay-hoos. But Colin Cowherd is one of the few people at the Worldwide Leader™ (TV or radio) whose opinions I actually agree with– at least at times. He does kind of go overboard on things, but I typically agree with a good portion of his opinions on things.
My absolute favorite has got to be Freddy Coleman, on the radio from 7p-midnight. That guy is awesome.
But anyway, yeah, Hanford’s water sucks.
You’re right on about the water and thanks for posting your thoughts on our blog.

No problem, and back at you.
Most of the bottled waters are in fact tap water or something even worse. Get more information and find better alternatives at http://www.BottledWaterBlues.com
