Not that anyone missed me…
…but I’m back.
My ISP has changed from Insight to Comcast, which means I have to change my freakin’ connection information, send emails to everyone I know with my new address (once they finally decide they’re actually going to change it: “look for information coming soon”), change all my mailing lists, blah blah blah blah. Any of you unfortunate souls with the same ISP, you get to do that too. Be prepared.
Well, it turns out that for reasons unbeknownst to anyone but Comcast, they just up and deactivated my modem Wednesday. Mrs. Johann called them this morning to see if they could tell us anything (this was obviously before I found out they deactivated the modem), and the friggin’ Mensa president she spoke to told her they “shut off the internet to the entire Springfield area”.
As before, any of you other unfortunate souls that have Comcast know that would be incorrect.
So this evening, I decided for shits and giggles to call Comcast and find out when they might be “turning the internet back on to the entire Springfield area”, at which time I was told they didn’t (”nor would they”) shut off the internet to an entire area (unless there was some major technical problem) but that they deactivated my modem. I told the surprisingly helpful girl on the phone (thank you, Lisa) that it would sure be “Comcastic” of them to RE-activate my modem. She did, and said she will even give us credit for the two days we were without service. We’ll see if THAT comes true or not.
Anyway, I’m back, ready to once again piss people off with my completely irrelevant tirades about completely irrelevant things. I just hope this isn’t the start of some big ongoing catastrophuck that will result from being unwillingly switched to Comcast.

I’ve yet to be Comcasted.
In the words of the great Jedi Master:
“You will be. You WILL be.”
JDAB-
Glad to hear I’m not the only one getting screwed by the Comcastards!
I got Comcasted this week, as well. I work from home, and I was without a home network for two days (Wednesday and Thursday), which includes phone, since I’m a Vonage customer. First, I spent hours (literally) trying to get through to Comcast’s army of brain surgeons moonlighting as customer service agents only to be kicked to offices outside of the region who had no idea how to access my account info. I run a Linux box as my router, and with the help of a coworker, we found a workaround that got us “online” but all traffic leaving port 80 was being hijacked by Comcast. This meant every webpage I went to actually came up as a Welcome to Comcast page. Nothing I did would allow me to leave this particular site.
That night, Thursday night, I spoke with a tech at Comcast who told me my modem had been deactivated as well because they didn’t have it in their log, so their network wasn’t recognizing it. After I got the modem back on, we were good, except, we’d already told my Linux box to go to a particular Comcast server for DNS info. Which meant all my outgoing traffic was going to the DNS servers at Comcast that you are routed to when you try to hit their network as a non-Comcast customer. You could literally type http://www.fuck.goddamn, and you would be delivered to this particular Comcast server which begged for your account information. Finally, after some finagling, we changed the Linux box back to the DNS server for my network, and all is well.
So far, I hate Comcast.
John-
That is almost the EXACT SAME THING that happened to me- right down to their “Welcome to Comcast” hijack page!
I agree- I hate Comcast so far as well.
I guess maybe I’m one of the few lucky ones…at least so far. Other than having to do an occasional modem reset when it drops a connection every once in awhile, I have yet to be Comcasted or forced to suffer thru a Comcastrophy. I can’t even blame the Comcastards when my modem does drop a connection, because I’ve had to perform modem resets back when Insight was providing the services as my IP. It pisses my off when it happens, but it only takes 15-30 seconds to reset it and re-connect back on line. Of course I have one of the oldest cable modems around, since it’s the same one Insight provided me when I first went with them many years ago. Maybe I should consider updating my modem, but then it may not even be a modem problem.
