Johann Drops a Blog

Random ramblings from an idiot

Über-geeks should know this already

I.E., the “faceslap-dot-jaypeg” types. Ask one of those nimrods- I bet they know it. It’s probably on the MIT entrance exam.

Myself, I had to steal the information from another blog, which is where I get pretty much all “my ideas” for posts. But I thought it was interesting- I’m kinda into useless trivia. Matter of fact, I should do another post of completely worthless knowledge soon. Anyway, here you go.

The first dot.com ever was symbolics.com, registered on March 15, 1985. It is apparently a Virginia-based software company, and the website is still in use 28 years later, though the page looks like it could quite possibly be the original page.

The first dot-edu’s ever were cmu.edu, purdue.edu, rice.edu, and ucla.edu, all registered in April 1985.

The first dot-gov ever was css.gov, registered in June 1985.

The first dot-org ever was mitre.org, registered in July 1985.

A huge portion of the first 100 dot-coms ever registered are or were computer and/or software companies, naturally. Incidentally, apple.com was the 64th dot-com ever registered (February 19, 1987).

So anyway, there you are. You were dying to know what the first-ever dot-com was, and thanks to someone else, I was able to answer that question for you. Enjoy.
