Blog reading level requirements (?!)
I’ve seen this on a couple different local blogs I check out fairly regularly. Apparently some web site “scans your blog and determines the minimum reading level one must possess to understand your blog”.
You type in your blog address and it “scans” (note the quotes) and provides the results with a code you can proudly post on your blog. Only thing is, there’s only one “level”. I used JDAB four times and got the same result. The blogs I saw that also had this posted also had the same “result”. I obviously don’t put any credibility in the idea in the first place, but it would seem to me that if you’re going to have a little jokey random generator website for people to use, you might put in more than one possible result.
But I’ll play along. Here goes (ahem):
The minimum reading level one must possess to understand my blog is as follows:
Actually, now that I think about it, that’s fairly accurate. I think farts are funny, I like looking at boobies, and I am predominantly a fan of loud rock and roll.
YES!!!!
Uh-huh-huh-huh-huh, uh-huh-huh. That was cool.

Hey Johann. Yeah, I too think this kind of “scanning” stuff is a bunch of bunk. Like Flesch-Kincaid in Word. Those things always rank Hemingway at like 3rd grade reading level. I’m not the biggest Hemingway fan, but I know the guy was thinking and writing well beyond the 3rd grade.
As for results other than the “Junior High” result that you, I, and others have gotten, I did come across a blog yesterday that scored “Undergraduate.” See here.
Oooohhhh… “undergraduate”… impressive.
I use too many monosyllabic words, I guess. (Why does the word “monosyllabic” contain so many syllables?!)
Thanks for stopping by. I love your stuff. I just happened to catch you guys on Public Access a few weeks back when you had my buddy Nick from Unpainted Huffhines on, discussing the fall/winter movie releases. Good show.
Anyhooze, thanks again for stopping by, and I hope you’ll visit again and often.
P.S. I agree with you about Hemingway…
Yeah, that “reading level” thing is a scam. Mine is “junior high” as well, but Viva El Birdos is merely “elementary.” Now, I read pretty well, and most of the concepts at VEB are beyond my comprehension.
If you go to that scam site and look at the code for the image, the alt tag links to a payday loan site. It’s a pretty lowdown vehicle for spam.
Yeah, I noticed that. I sort of accidentally deleted that link or something. Pity. My bad.
And I have been to VEB before; it’s WAY out of my league.
Johann-
Thanks, man. Glad you enjoy the show. That interview with Nick was one of our favorites. We could have sat there for another hour talking movies and music.
